Guiding public policies to strengthen and create legally protected areas in the Amazon basin is strategic in combating the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. Protected areas are effective instruments for safeguarding the integrity of ecosystems, biodiversity and associated environmental services, such as soil conservation and protection of watersheds, pollination, nutrient recycling and climate balance, among others.
During the2nd International Conference on Amazon and New Economies, which starts tomorrow (06) and continues until November 8, at the Hangar Convention Center, in Belém-PA, Claudinete dos Santos Colé, member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Remaining Quilombola Communities of the Municipality of Oriximina-PA (ARQMO) and other experts will debate the expansion of protected territories in the Amazon.
The journalism initiative Amazônia Vox is providing its first live, in-person coverage this week. With a team of twelve professionals, the main points and debates of the panels during the 2nd International Conference on the Amazon and New Economies will be highlighted.Follow the coverage here.
Indigenous lands, conservation units and quilombola territories play a crucial role in representing and maintaining ecosystems. Claudinete emphasizes the importance of the Amazon rainforest for the health of the world. “I believe that planning these actions that aim to mitigate and minimize the impacts that this environment is suffering, guaranteeing quality of life, this is vital for the life of the planet, for the life of communities, for all of us,” she said.
Furthermore, she highlights the role of local organizations and the federal government in expediting the issue of titling and demarcation of quilombola and indigenous territories. “The Amazon needs this demarcation because, since there is no land regularization within the Amazon, there is a loose land that everyone wants to own. The problem is that these people want to own it in order to destroy it. We, the quilombola people who live here, work with sustainability and actions to protect the environment,” she assessed.
The panel “Expansion of Protected Territories in the Amazon” will take place on November 7, 2024, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition to the representative of ARQMO, the following will be present: researcher and consultant, Cláudio C. Maretti; the technical director of Sustainability at Anglo American, Cristiano Cobo; the secretary of the Indigenous Peoples of the State of Pará, Puyr Tembé; the vice president of the Organization of Rubber Tappers of Rondônia, Sebastião Gonçalves Neves; and the former Minister of the Environment and Managing Partner of Consultoria Seiva, José Carlos Carvalho, as moderator of the panel.
