By Daniel Nardin, from Belém (PA)
This week, the journalism initiative Amazônia Vox will be providing its first live, in-person coverage. With a team of twelve professionals, the main points and debates of the panels will be highlighted during the 2nd International Conference on the Amazon and New Economies. The event will be held between November 6th and 8th, at Hangar - Convention Center, in Belém (PA).
The team is made up of executive director Daniel Nardin as general coordinator and content manager Alice Martins as editor-in-chief, with support from Carla Fischer, who will also assist in reporting. The team of reporters is made up of Dedé Mesquita, Nilson Cortinhas, Fabrício Queiroz and Mateus Miranda. In addition to producing texts, interviews and special content for the website and social media, the coverage will be produced on mobile, with Vanessa Campos. The team is coordinating social media with Maycom Carvalho, Raffa Régis and Laila Manxineru. Amazônia Vox's special coverage of the International Conference on the Amazon and New Economies is provided by Vale.
The Conference - Representatives of forest peoples, civil society, academia, public and private sectors will meet in the capital of Pará to discuss issues involving the environment, economy, and sustainable development of the Amazon region. In total, there will be 25 panels and around 100 speakers, in addition to lectures, a Bioeconomy Fair, a technology challenge and discussion groups on culture and literary production.
The conference is curated by former Minister of the Environment Izabella Teixeira, currently a Member of the UN Economic and Social Council. The event will feature two keynote speakers: Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation (ECF), and the French government's special representative for COP 21, which sealed the Paris Agreement in 2015.
Also present will be Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first African woman to be elected president (Liberia) and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. As the first woman to assume the presidency of an African country, Ellen Sirleaf is a symbol of female empowerment and the fight for social justice and sustainable development.
Another highlight of the program is the participation of former US Secretary of State and former Senator John Kerry, who until early 2024 was the “special envoy for climate” in the government of Joe Biden, who is ending his term. With the result of the elections in the United States, expectations are high for an assessment of the prospects of the new government of Donald Trump, starting in 2025.
Other notable names at the event include the young Txai Suruí indigenous leader, Thelma Krug, vice-chair of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). The IPCC is a group of scientists established by the United Nations (UN) to monitor and advise on all global science related to climate change. All IPCC reports focus on different aspects of climate change and guide debates at the Conference of the Parties and other global debates on the topic, also serving as a reference for public policies.
The meeting will also be attended by Ângela Mendes (Coordinator of the Chico Mendes Committee), Júlio Barbosa de Aquino (President of the National Council of Extractive Populations), Maria Nice Machado (Secretary for Women of the CNS), Toya Machineri (Coordinator of the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon) and the CEO of the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM), Raul Jungmann, among others.
“Finding a balance between the socioeconomic development of the Amazon region and sustainability is a complex challenge. However, there are economic practices capable of harmonizing these two dimensions, which need to be widely promoted and strengthened. This second edition of the event brings together several leaders from sectors around the world, with the aim of driving sustainable growth while preserving a vital asset for the future of the planet,” says Jungmann.
